Supremacy makes you stupid.

"... to myself I seem to have been only like a boy playing on the seashore, and diverting myself in now and then finding of a smoother pebble or a prettier shell than ordinary, whilst the great ocean of truth lay all undiscovered before me." - Isaac Newton

Uhhh... context?
Well it was inspired by
this article
and also by a talk I went to at UCT that got me thinking...
But really the point is that supremists, who think that their people or race or class or gender or whatever are better than the rest, really make themselves stupid in doing that. How can you sit in a little self-congratulatory circle with people who think like you, look like you, live in the same way as you, and think you're all that? All patting each other on the back for being so great. But the greatness is only because you don't look outwards enough to realise that actually you and your people are pretty small, pretty ordinary, and pretty much just like everyone else.
And that whole "looking inwards and thinking you are so great" thing is something South Africa, and white people in SA in particular, do a lot. Which is why we don't really engage with other African scholars, for example, because we assume that they are the ones that should be learning from us, because we are so ahead of them. So we don't ever learn. Unteachable, I suppose, is a word you could use.
And eish, thats really stupid.
