Random ponderance

So my random ponderance for the day:

Could our massive emphasis on corruption in the higher levels of government be a way for middle class people to make poverty someone else's fault, and someone else's problem?

I'm not saying corruption isn't a big problem. I just suddenly wondered today if our obsession with corruption stories in the news (especially involving top people) is not possibly related to our desire to pin the problem of poverty on someone other than ourselves. To think that most South Africans are poor because of corruption in the top levels of government (which involves big sums of money, but actually relatively few people compared to the total population). Rather than thinking that most South Africans are poor because a large number of South Africans (maybe about 10-15%) live pretty opulent middle class lifestyles, taking advantage of our social structure which advantages the rich ...

(I don't think either is entirely true actually, I think there are many reasons for poverty in SA. But I'm not sure right now that corruption in top levels of government is any more of a factor than the wide spread opulence of the middle class... hmmmm....)
